Causes of Astigmatism
Irregular astigmatism may be caused by certain eye conditions, such as chalazion and keratoconus. If you have a blocked gland on the inside of your eyelid, you may develop a lump called a chalazion. This puts pressure on the cornea, which then becomes forced to change shape, which then causes astigmatism. This is a rare condition. If you suffer from Keratoconus, then your cornea becomes thin and bulges and this uneven shape causes astigmatism.
Eye surgery or an eye injury can cause astigmatism. For example, an eye infection can cause scarring on the cornea, which then changes the way light enters the eye and focuses on the retina, and therefore vision becomes distorted. Although laser eye surgery does not usually involve stitches, if you have had treatment, which does involve stitches, the corneas shape will be distorted and therefore astigmatism will result. This astigmatism may only be temporary as the cornea heals.
