Symptoms of Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)

  • Squinting.  This is when eyes don't line-up and one eye may appear crossed or look outwards.
  • Frowning
  • Closing of eye
  • Poor visual acuity
  • Headaches
  • Eyestrain
  • Eyelids appearing red around the edges, crusted or swollen
  • Teary eyes
  • Red and inflamed eyes

A child may do the following:

  • Rubs eyes a lot
  • Close or deliberately cover an eye
  • Tilt their head or push it forwards
  • Hold objects close to their face such as books because they are having trouble seeing.
  • Excessively blink

Even if a child is not showing any of these symptoms of lazy eye, this does not mean that there are no problems.  Eye tests are crucial in childhood.
