Eye Test for Lazy Eye (Amblyopia)

It is essential that a child’s eyes be tested in early childhood.  If a child has a refractive error, which is not corrected, lazy eye may be developing.  This can certainly happen if one eye has little or no refractive error but the other one does.  A child’s vision may appear to be fine but, without an eye test both eyes cannot be tested properly, independently.  Even if your child has had their eyes tested at school, if you think that they may have a problem, you must get their eyes examined.

If your child does have a lazy eye, they may be referred to an orthoptist.  Orthoptists often work with children who have lazy eye or squint problems.  Alternatively, they may be referred to an ophthalmologist who can assess and treat them further.
