If you are considering medical tourism, it is important that you read about the treatment or surgery and understand what it entails.  Consider the side effects and risks involved and whether you are willing to take these on, in a foreign country. 

Testimonials

If you know anybody who has had treatment abroad, talk to them about their experience.  This will help you to decide whether it is right for you as an individual.  You could also ask clinics if there are any patients who may be willing to provide a verbal testimony over the phone to you.  

Newspapers and TV Commercials

These are both good sources of information.  Newspapers will often write about good and bad clinics and places to go.  It is crucial that you choose a destination, which is receiving good press.  TV commercials often show the popular destinations.

Internet

The Internet offers a wealth of resources including; contact details of clinics, testimonials, recommendations, and treatment information.  Read through clinic websites to find out more about what treatments are offered, about procedures and learn about clinical teams at different clinics.  

Medical Exhibitions

Exhibitions take place, mainly in London and offer an opportunity to meet international healthcare providers.  

UK Consultation

Many UK clinics offer free consultations.  It may be an idea to attend some of these.  This will not only help you decide whether travelling abroad is for you, but also help you learn about the best procedures for you and details of risks and complications.  Ask about the care and assistance required following surgery and about the normal contingency plans in case of complications and what the overall recovery time is.

Optician / GP

Speak with your health care providers about treatment abroad.  Although they may not be able to recommend a clinic, they may be able to shed some light on the procedure and offer unbiased advice.

For some people, the most important factor is cost.  Use the information that you have gathered to compare the cost of eye treatments.  Compare like for like so that you are getting the best possible deal.  Different techniques and materials may be used by different clinics.  Compare different clinics to ensure that you are happy with the treatment and service offered by your chosen surgeon at your selected clinic.  Every country has its own regulations and supervision of treatment.  Check the credentials of the clinic and of the individual surgeon, to ensure that you are in safe hands.

It is important not to go ahead with eye surgery based on a clinics website, their pictures or letters to you.  Even if a particular country attracts a lot of tourists in general, this does not mean that it has clinics offering high quality eye treatments.  You must research the reputation of surgeons and clinics.  You must feel completely happy and comfortable with the procedure and with who and where it is carried out.  Remember that you are entitled to change your mind about the treatment, right up until treatment commences.
