Cost of Eye Surgery Abroad

The cost of medical surgery/treatment in the UK, is often much higher than in the rest of the world.  This has opened the doors to medical tourism, with thousands of people travelling abroad each year, for cosmetic and elective treatments in countries, which are not as expensive as the UK.  When comparing the cost of treatment, try to negotiate the overall cost, to save you as much money as possible and consider the following factors:

Treatment Cost

Having researched your required/desired treatment, you should be aware of all the costs involved.  Many treatment providers, medical tourism agents and brokers, will offer treatment packages, which include the cost of flights and accommodation.  Compare these to get the best possible deal.  Find out from the clinic or medical broker, exactly what is included in the cost of the treatment.

Be careful of extras and add-ons.  You may be initially given low prices to entice you and these may build up with the extras.  The cost of treatment will vary from place to place and from clinic to clinic.  It can even depend on the surgeon and their experience and expertise.  Typically, the following may be included in a package deal; surgeon fees, clinic costs, meals, laboratory work, anaesthesia, consultations, flight, travelling to and from the clinic and hospital, medication, local mobile use and the cost of a translator.

Exchange Rates

By looking at the countries currency and exchange rate, you can find out how far your money will go in the country you have chosen.

Flight Cost

If you are not opting for a package deal with flight cost included, budget airlines now travel from many of the UK’s large and small airports and to a growing number of destinations, particularly within Europe.  Medical tourism is now more affordable and accessible than ever.  The cost of flights to more distant developing countries such as India may be quite high, but not when comparing the saving you may make on the treatment.  Further, a pound can go a long way in many developing countries and so whilst you are there, living expenses can be negligible.

Other Travel Costs

Following treatment, you may not be able to hire a car and drive for a certain period of time.  Enquire about public transport and the cost of this.  Some clinics will provide you with a chauffeur who will collect you from the airport, take you to your hotel and to and from the clinic.  Some will even travel on the flight with you.  Find out if there are additional costs for such services.

Other Costs

Take into account the following expenses which may or may not be included in a package deal; passport, travel visas, food, drink, phone calls, medications, medical supplies and local taxes.

You may be required to pay for some or all of your treatment in advance or to leave a deposit.  Find out if the clinic accepts UK credit cards, money transfers from your bank or if they require cash payments.  Find out if you can pay in instalments.  Also, ensure that you have signed a consent form and received a contract, before making a payment.
