Eye Surgery Clinics Abroad
Clinic Regulation & Supervision
Whether you are undergoing an eye procedure in a hospital, small clinic or private surgery, each country will have its own professional regulatory body. This will oversee its clinics and ensure that certain standards are met. In the UK for example, the Health and Safety Executive, the Healthcare Commission and local primary trusts will assess, monitor and list suggested clinics. They may not however, recommend clinics, as they are independent organisations.
Each country will have a health division and medical body to oversee clinics. Once you have the contact details of the clinic, ask the clinic or do your own research to find out who regulates and monitors the clinics in that country. If you are using a medical tourism agent, they may be able to point you in the right direction. The Internet has a vast amount of information and you may be able to do your own online research.
Treatment Cost
Compare like for like. If you are happy with being treated at a number of clinics, compare their prices including package deals and additional services. For further guidelines visit the cost comparison page.
Questions to Ask at the Clinic
You may wish to ask the clinic a number of questions. You have the right to do this and the people you contact and speak to should be sympathetic and understanding. You must trust their advice and it is important to feel that you are in safe hands. Ensure that all your questions have been addressed and answered properly, so that you make an informed decision. It is important to return home safely and without complications, so think carefully about what information you need. Questions you may want to ask include:
- Will my procedure take place at the clinic?
- Will my aftercare appointments and consultations take place at the clinic?
- Do you have more than one site location?
- Do your surgeons travel to the UK to carry out follow-up appointments?
- Are you certified with the local and national health organisations/regulatory bodies?
- In case of an emergency, how far are you from an emergency hospital?
- What is the infection rate at the clinic?
- Which procedures are most commonly performed?
- How do your costs compare with other clinics?
- What is the payment procedure?
- What is the clinics complaint policy?
Once you feel confident with the clinic, you may wish to find out more about the particular surgeon and their qualifications and expertise.
